New Delhi: As the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP combine retain its government in Punjab, the results show Akali Dal’s intrusion into urban votes which were earlier with its ally the BJP.

This time SAD has come out victorious getting huge support from urban voters. The party was only three seats short of a majority in the state. SAD had exchanged some urban seats with the BJP at the last moment of assembly polls which it managed to bag finally.
In 2007 elections BJP had made its presence felt by getting mostly urban seats and played a vital role to ensure SAD-BJP coalition government in the state.

In 2007 polls, SAD couldn’t fare well in cities and was dependent on BJP.  Sukhbir Singh Badal was aware of this fact and drew an action plan to strengthen party’s foundation in urban areas. SAD conducted a survey and planned its strategy according to the survey report. As a result of which Akali Dal implemented developmental projects in cities to impress the voters.

The SAD led-government ensured to give Jalandhar’s Traffic system a face-lift by constructing flyovers. The state government proposed several developmental projects for Amritsar and Ludhiana along with taking initiatives to make cities slum-free.

The SAD-BJP combine attacked Congress several times for its ‘scam-tainted’ image. The spate of scandals and scams in UPA 2 provided the party with much needed ammo to launch attacks against the Congress.

Not only this, SAD started its image-makeover just at the right time. The party forced three tainted BJP ministers to resign after they were found allegedly involved in corrupt practices.

Consequently, the SAD has saved its chair being an incumbent for the first time in the history of Punjab, brushing aside poll predictions.
