Remember Harleen Kaur, who grabbed the eyes of Indian audience in “Love Aaj Kal”? Who had ever imagined that a 19 year- old Brazilian model could play the role of a Punjabi kudi, when she actually couldn’t speak Hindi? But Giselle Monteiro proved everyone wrong and played the role to perfection.
Only two films old Giselle, blessed with a face of angel, has made a mark on the minds of audience with her innocent look and natural acting skills. In a candid chat with ‘Sakhi’ she shares her journey from modeling to acting in Bollywood.
Giselle Monteiro who walked all through from Brazil to India to carve a niche in Bollywood is known to everyone. She has done two Hindi movies, Love Aaj Kal and Always Kabhi Kabhi.
In order to place foot in Bollywood knowing Hindi is a pre-requisite but this was a bit challenging for this Brazilian model. But on our request she uttered few Hindi sentences in her foreign accent.
Giselle was struggling hard to express herself through her foreign accent-influenced-Hindi which took our conversation to a lighter mood.
Her gentleness has already impressed everyone. After seeing Harleen, a simple beautiful Punjabi kudi of ‘Love Aaj Kaal’, everyone was eager to know who was this girl? It was hard to believe that a Brazilian girl could portray a ‘Sardarni’ so efficiently.
On asking about her Indian like features she said, “My parents do not hesitate to call me an Indian. My grandfather came to Brazil from Italy. Though my mother and her family hail from Brazil, I look like an Indian girl. Everyone addresses me as an Indian beauty.”
“For h modeling assignments I travel across the world. Everyone told me to try my luck in Bollywoodbecause of my Indian look. And see here I am.”
Journey towards fame
Immediately after essaying the role of Harleen in ‘Love Aaj Kal’ under Imtiaz Ali’s direction she acheived success. She became the face of various famous brands. She was seen as a showstopper in fashion shows as her beauty mesmerized the fashion designers as well.
Though her latest movie ‘Always Kabhi Kabhi’ was not a hit, she feels happy as she got a chance to shake a leg with superstar Shahrukh Khan in this movie.
She said, “I was given more scope to speak in Hindi in this film. It is true that working in Hindi movies is not easy but if you are working with efficient people everything goes well.”
After sharing screen with two Khans of Bollywood, this Brazilian lass is preparing herself for more films. On asking about the two Khans she jokingly said, “Let’s see who the third Khan would be? Apart from the Khans, I am eager to work with the Bachchans, Roshans and Kapoors. If everything goes accordingly I will sign a film very soon and for this I have to learn Hindi. I have faith on myself. Let yourself free and keep moving with time, this is my philosophy. If one day I am bored of acting I will leave it. I want to do powerful roles. I love the people of India. They are very cordial. I love them and India as well.”
