Adding to the controversies is the latest, but unconfirmed news of Salman's ex-flame Aishwarya Rai filing an e-petition on the website change.org against him being chosen to represent the nation during the mega sports event.

Talking further about 'bhaijaan's' love interests, his ex-girlfriend Katrina Kaif took a rather friendly jibe at her former boyfriend Salman Khan over the row and said the superstar is not new to controversies. She said, “Salman Khan ko le kay controversy hai, woh naya cheez hai kya? (Is a controversy about Salman a new thing?)"

Other industry people like Sidharth Malhotra and Karan Johar also issued statements saying they do not know much about the issue but they love Salman and hence totally support his appointment as India's goodwill ambassador for Rio Olympics.

Indian athletes, though, appear to be disappointed with the Indian Olympic Association's move. The torchbearer of Indian athletics, Milkha Singh and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt said that Salman doesn't deserve the honour on grounds of not contributing anything to the field of sports.

Cricketer, and former swashbuckling Indian opener Gautam Gambhir opined, "There is no shortage of real sportspersons in the country. People have done massive things in this country. I would have been happier had Abhinav Bindra or someone else being made the goodwill ambassador”.

However, former India cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar said there was nothing wrong with IOA appointing Salman Khan as the Indian Olympic contingent's goodwill ambassador and cited the example of how IPL 'benefitted' through its association with Bollywood stars.

Amid all the negative reactions, Salman's father Salim Khan came to the fore and tweeted in support of his son. He said, “ Salman may not have competed but is an A list swimmer, cyclist and weight lifter. Sportsmen are performing because of sports lovers like us”.

Taking on Milkha Singh, Salim added, “Milkha ji, it's not Bollywood industry but the Indian film industry which is the largest in the world”.

The former scriptwriter taunted Singh referring to his biopic, "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag", as he wrote, "The same industry which resurrected you from fading away in oblivion”.
