Sangrur: Despite monsoon deficit, Sangrur could retain its position as the largest paddy producer in the state, according to the Punjab Agricultural University experts.

The deficit in rainfall at Sangrur district has been to the tune of 54 percent.

However, the farmers due to their grit and determination have turnaround the situation. Besides pressing into service the diesel engines for watering their fields they were also assisted by the state government which provided adequate power from the agriculture feeder, says PAU experts.

The chief agriculture officer (CAO) Rajinder Singh Sohi on Monday said the district could produce over 12 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of paddy this year.

This is compared to 11.88 lakh MT produced during corresponding period of last year when the district achieved the distinction of being the top paddy producer in the state.
