An Apex Court Bench of Justices TS Thakur and C Nagappam while acquitting the 11 accused reversed the TADA court verdict that awarded them imprisonment varying from 10 to 20 years.

On January 21, 1993, a bomb had exploded near Sadhna School at Mini Bazar in Surat's Varachha area, killing a school girl and injuring 11 others. Next day, another bomb had gone off at Surat railway station platform number 1, targeting the Gujarat Express train in which 38 passengers were injured.

According to sources, the accused were alleged to have used government vehicles to transport bombs and other equipments for the blast.

Former Gujarat minister Mohammed Surti of the Congress party had been convicted and sentenced to 20 years in jail for his involvement in the 1993 Surat blasts case.
