Lieutenant General Suhag is scheduled to take over as the Army Chief on August 1, after General Bikram Singh retires.
Lieutenant General Dastane has said that the new Army Chief's selection is mired in ‘favouritism’.
Defence Minister Arun Jaitley had earlier this month told the Parliament that the appointment of Lieutenant General Dalbir Singh Suhag as the next Army Chief is final and ‘one should keep army appointments out of political realm’.
Jaitley’s comment came after the NDA government was left embarrassed by one of its minister’s former army chief General (retired) VK Singh tweeting against the Army Chief-designate.
“If unit kills innocents, does dacoity and then head of organization tries to protect them, should he not be blamed? Criminals should go free!!” he wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter.
Lieutenant General Suhag’s appointment was one of the last major decisions taken by the Congress-led UPA government before it was trounced in the Lok Sabha elections by the BJP.
