New Delhi: The Supreme Court Bar Association has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court challenging the Centre's notification levying service tax on lawyers. The Delhi HC will hear the petition on Monday.

However, the HC has already put a stay on the Union Government’s notification to impose service tax on practising lawyers while hearing a petition filed by the Bar Association.

The Supreme Court Bar Association, in its petition, demanded that amendments be made in the Finance Act related to service tax.

Notably, the Central government on April 25 had issued a notification of Legal Practitioners Bill 2010 imposing a 10 percent duty on every legal practitioner for their legal services. The Bill was to be implemented from May 1.

The lawyers of Delhi HC and other six courts in Delhi had staged a protest against the government notification.
