New Delhi: The Supreme Court has stopped the state government plan to provide rice at Rs 2 per kg to all ration card holders. A bench comprising Judge Altamas Kabir and Cyriac Joseph on the petition filed by the Election Commission issued this directive.

The bench stayed the High Court order and restrained the state government from implementing the scheme. The High Court had passed the order by challenging the EC order which prevented the government from implementing the scheme. The EC had challenged the High Court order in the Apex Court.

The EC has contended extending the benefit of the scheme was against the model code of conduct in the state where Assembly elections would be held on April 13 and said that all ration card holders are not entitled to get rice at Rs 2 per kg.

The Apex Court has even served the notice to CPI legislator Rajaji M Thomas who had challenged the EC order which prevented the government from implementing the scheme.
