New Delhi: About 50 lakh free cooking gas (LPG) connections have been provided to poor households in the last 100 days and the target of 5 crore is expected to be achieved well before the 3-year schedule, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday.

Dharmendra Pradhan, the Minister of State (I/C) for Petroleum & Natural Gas, has informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply that the ministry has decided to make BS-IV–compliant fuel available across the country by April 2017. This will be done in a phased manner.

The government may have slashed subsidy on LPG cylinders and capped them to six per annum per family but that doesn’t seem to bother Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. Surprisingly the minister consumes 8 cylinders every month on his tea parties.
