A police officer was shot dead by militants in Pulwama district of south Kashmir on Friday. Assistant Sub-Inspector Farooq Ahmad was shot from point-blank range by unidentified pistol-borne militants in Pulwama town, 32 kms from Srinagar, this afternoon, a police spokesman said.

A CPI (Maoist) politburo member, identified as Ankul Chandra Naskar alias Pareshda has been arrested from Silchar in Assam’s Cachar district, the police said on Friday. 65 year old Naskar was wanted for his involvement in several cases.
