Washington: Scientists, including one of Indian-origin, have developed a new technology that could significantly improve the efficiency and lower the cost of solar cells. Researchers at Stanford University created silicon 'nanopillars' on solar cells to hide the reflective metal contact and funnel light directly to the semiconductor below.

New Delhi: Lanco Solar Private Limited, arm of Lanco Infratech, yesterday inked a pact with Chhattisgarh to set up 100 MW solar cell manufacturing plant. "Lanco Infratech Ltd (LITL) today announced its subsidiary Lanco Solar signed an agreement with Chhattisgarh. As per the MOU inked today with Chhattisgarh, Lanco Solar will set up 100 MW solar cell manufacturing plant," the company said in a statement.

Singapore: Apple will open its first retail store in Singapore, which will also be Southeast Asia's first to be powered solely by solar energy, officials said today. Solar energy developer Sunseap Group said in a statement that it will provide the store with renewable energy by harnessing its systems set up across 800 of the city's rooftops from January next year.

New Delhi: The country witnessed a decline of 12 percent in solar power generation at a total 883 MW last year, according to energy consulting firm Mercom Capital Group. Total solar energy installations in 2013 stood at 1,004 MW, it said.
