Telecom stocks gain as government approves spectrum sharing

Mumbai: Telecom stocks today rose by up to 4 percent after the government allowed companies to share airwaves in the same band so as to reduce call drops. Shares of Bharti Airtel surged 4.13 percent and Idea Cellular gained 2.56 percent on BSE. Reliance Communications too jumped 3.52 percent but later pared the gains as the trade progressed.

New Delhi: Doing some plain speaking on call drops, Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad asked mobile operators to walk the extra mile to reinforce their systems as they have enough spectrum to provide telephony services without interruption. The Minister said he has asked sectoral regulator TRAI to suggest a disincentive mechanism to tackle the problem, though he refused to share if it will be a financial disincentive.
