The West Bengal government on Thursday announced fresh panchayat election dates on May 5 and 8, but the State Election Commission told the Calcutta High Court that it would not conduct the polls without deployment of central paramilitary forces.

New Delhi: The Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress, which was formed in 1998 as a small regional party, has got the national party status on Friday. The Election Commission has granted the status to the party which is currently the fourth largest party in the Lok Sabha after BJP, Congress and AIADMK.
