Thodupuzha (Kerala): The UPA Government's top priority is to increase farm production and achieve food security by ushering in a second Green Revolution, Defence Minister A K Antony said on Monday.
"The second Green Revolution is the top on the agenda of the Centre and the government has been spending huge amounts to achieve the goals under it," Antony said inaugurating an Agricultural Festival organised by Gandhi Study Centre here.
Antony, however, wanted organic method of farming to he promoted in a big way while implementing schemes to augment food production.
Referring to Kerala, he said the state should strive to achieve self-reliance in at least vegetable and fruit production. It was time that the state formulated and implemented policies to achieve the targets in this vital sector.
Antony said it was important to reduce the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides in agriculture by giving an impetus to organic farming.
"The state should strive to create a string of organic farm villages which could produce vegetables and fruits to meet its demands," he said.
State Water Resources Minister and study centre chairman P J Joseph and state Finance Minister K M Mani were among those present at the function.
