Jammu (JNN, Bureau): In line with other states of the country, the second phase of census on Wednesday has kicked off in Jammu & Kashmir. As many as 28 officials have been assigned to execute the programme.

Inaugurating the census, state Governor NN Vohra urged people to participate in the census programme to develop the nation.

The census officials along with volunteers started visiting every district. Deputy Commissioner along with J-K Municipal Commissioner was made principal census officer of the programme which will end on February 28.

According to sources, 24 principal officers will be pressed into the service and as many as 172 tehsildars and members of municipal committee will be appointed as in-charge officers. About 23,500 enumerator, and more than four thousand supervisors were assigned for making the census successful. The first phase of the census was carried out from May 15 to June 30 this year.

Eunuch too in census form

In the 139 years of census history in India, the eunuch community, whose arrival on the occasion of marriage or child birth is billed to be lucky, first time has been included in counting of population.

The 2011-census, which has started on February 9 across the country, is considered unique for the inclusion of eunuch community besides men and women after Independence.
In the census form, there is a category named as Code-3 for the transgender community.
