New Delhi: The security issue of MLAs rocked the first day of Delhi Assembly on Tuesday.  Cutting across the party lines, MLAs demanded adequate security arrangements.

They were irked by the hollow assurances given by the Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit six months ago. Taking up the issue in the Assembly, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MLA Shoaib Iqbal said that the Chief Minister had assured MLAs of proper security when an INLD MLA Bharat Singh was attacked in the month of June.

Adding on to that, Bharat Singh said that he had to approach the Delhi High Court in order to get protection.

Replying to the questions raised by the MLAs, the Chief Minister said that she had taken up the issue with the Delhi Police Commissioner but he expressed inability in providing security to MLAs citing lack of sufficient security personnel.

She said that the Delhi Government offered to pay money to the Delhi Police for providing security to the MLAs but the issue was not resolved. The Chief Minister added “the Delhi police cannot raise its own force.”

Pacifying angry MLAs, Speaker Yoganand Shastri advised the Chief Minister to discuss the issue with Delhi Police Commissioner once again.
