Jamshedpur: Aimed for a full-fleged commercial production soon, Self-Help Group (SHG), Jamadoba in collaboration with Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) on Monday launched their home made and hygienic pickle, in the brand name of 'Grihani' here.

Surekha Nerukar of the All India Women’s Conference (AIWC) launched the product at a function organized by TSRDS here.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Nerurkar, wife of Tata Steel Managing Director H M Nerurkar, said TSRDS has motivated the SHGs to set an example about women empowerment in real sense.

Nerurkar said 60 percent of our food products mainly vegetables perish in the absence of storage facility and the SHG group must take advantage of it and utilize the products properly.

Referring to SHG activities, Dilith Castleton, Joint Secretary of TSRDS, said of the 25 SHGs of women formed in Jharia division of TSRDS, eight SHGs have been provided with the training on pickle making.

Till last year, these women were engaged in pickle making and marketted those locally to contribute their share to the family income before TSRDS conducted a survey for raw material, sourcing and availability, market potential and feasibility to scale up this business.

Finding a good prospect, the SHGs decided to go for a commercial production following the survey at various canteens, guest houses, clubs, hostels of Tata Steel as well as retail outlets of Reliance Fresh and local shops.

Following the survey, the SHGs started commercial production of five varieties of pickle including Ole, red chilli, Lemon, amla and Green Chilli after TSRDS, Jamadoba had organized a pickle training cum production training recently, Castleton said.
