Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 433.40 crore on last Thursday, as per provisional data from the stock exchanges.
The market may remain volatile this week in view of expiry of futures and options April contract on Wednesday. The stock market will remain closed on Thursday, April 24, on account of Parliamentary elections in Mumbai constituency.
The Sensex resumed higher at 22,644.75 and firmed up further to 22,726.86 before quoting at 22,722.08 at 1000 hrs, showing a gain of 93.24 points, or 0.41 percent, from its last weekend's level.
The NSE 50-share Nifty also moved up by 24.50 points, or 0.36 percent, to 6,803.90 at 1000 hrs.
Major gainers were BHEL (1.49 percent), Hindalco (1.42 percent), SSLT (1.40 percent), SBI (1.34 percent), Larsen (1.33 percent), Bharti Airtel (1.02 percent) and Axis Bank (1.00 percent).
Other Asian markets edged higher in their morning trade on Monday.
Key benchmark indices in China, Singapore, Japan and Indonesia rose by 0.01-0.63 percent while indices in South Korea and Taiwan fell by 0.08-0.35 percent.
Markets in Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand are closed today for Easter holiday.
