Kolkata: A sesame oil production unit, stated to be the largest of its kind in the eastern region, was inaugurated on Wednesday by Union minister of state for Tourism Sultan Ahmed at Uluberia in Howrah district.

The 60-tonne per day crushing capacity unit was set up at an estimated cost of Rs 60 crore by private sector Presidency Impex, a city-based company.

Company director Biswanath Agarwal said that in the first phase the company would start a crushing unit, a refinery unit in the second and a solvent extension plant in the third.

Company sources said that though West Bengal produced the best and highest quantity of sesame in the country, the harvest had to be sent to other states as there were not many plants to convert it into oil.

Sesame oil is stated to be good for controlling high blood pressure, gastric, cholesterol and other health problems.
