New Delhi: A PIL was on Thursday filed in the Supreme Court challenging the appointment of Shashi Kant Sharma as Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG).

Shashi Kant Sharma sworn-in as CAG

Sharma's appointment as CAG raked up a debate of conflict of interest as he would be entrusted with the task of auditing defence deals during 2003-10 -- when he was in the Defence Ministry.

On Wednesday, BJP and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had expressed reservations over appointment of Sharma, saying there could be a ‘conflict of interest’ as he will be auditing defence deals in which he had a role as Defence Secretary.

Sharma had spent over ten years in the Defence Ministry during which high profile and controversial deals were finalized including the VVIP Chopper agreement between the government and an Italian company AgustaWestland.

“A substantial part of budget was spent on defence procurement. He (Sharma) will audit it himself. Is it appropriate?" Arun Jaitley, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, said on Wednesday.
