Sheikhpura: Locals staged a dharna near Barbigha police station in Bihar's Sheikhpura district on Wednesday demanding arrest of the former Superintendent of Police for the brutal torture of a liquor trader.

The people led by the Bihar Navnirman Manch leader Shiv Kumar Singh and the CPI state council member Jitendra Nath sat on dharna for several hours and raised slogans against the state government to press for arrest of the former SP Babu Ram for the brutal torture of the liquor trader Mukesh Kumar last week.

Senior police officials rushed to the spot and pacified the protesters. Kumar was tortured by policemen at the official residence-cum-office of the former Sheikhpura SP on January 25.

Taking serious view of the matter, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had ordered removal of Babu Ram and transferred about a dozen policemen posted at Barbigha police station, besides instituting a high-level probe by the Additional Director General of Police (ADG), Headquarters, Ravindra Kumar and the Inspector General of Police (IG), Prison Anand Kishore.

A case was also lodged against the former Sheikhpura SP, a liquor trader Mantu Singh and others in this connection.
