New Delhi: In order to blunt the opposition parties’ attacks over rising power tariff in the national capital, Sheila Dikshit government is mulling to increase electricity bill subsidy for the consumers.

The Delhi government is likely to announce the revised subsidy in the budget to be presented on March 20. Presently, the Delhi government provides a subsidy up to Rs one per unit to the domestic consumers who consume 200 units of electricity a month.

Sources said that the government is also mulling to provide subsidy to the consumers who use 300 units of electricity per month. Not only the BJP MLAs, but Congress members are also mounting pressure on the government to increase power bill subsidy.

Congress MLAs cite reasons that very few consumers come under the slab of 200 units per month as the power consumption has increased. The Delhi government spends Rs 225 crore annually on subsidy. The Chief Minister is considering increasing it. The government is also assessing the cost to be incurred on revised electricity subsidy.

Sources in the discoms said that Delhi has 50 percent of consumers whose monthly power consumption is around 200 units but the electricity use increases during the summer. If the government decides to increase electricity bill subsidy for the consumers who use 300 units per month, more people will be benefitted.
