Dehradun: The Forests Panchayats with the help of Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) is contemplating a novel concept of constructing shelter homes for pet animals in the mountainous terrains of the state.

Keeping the fact in mind that pet animals like goats have to spend nights in the open, the Forest Panchayats and CAMPA have decided to construct shelter for them in districts like Chamoli, Uttarkashi and Pithoragarh.

The Forest Department has also started formulating the action plan for the proposed 171 shelter houses in the hilly regions. It is expected that by the end of the ongoing financial year the shelters would come into existence.

During summers, the shepherds of Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Pithora region move to the hilly regions. And due to the lack of the sheds, the shepherds face several problems. Following which, the forest administration has decided to construct shelters in the mountainous regions.

According to Chief Forest Conservator, SS Sharma, “Under the CAMPA programme, 171 shelter homes for animals would be constructed under the supervision of Forest Department in Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Pithora.” After reviewing the performance of the programme it could be extended to other districts also, he added.
