Chandigarh: Shiromoni Akali Dal (SAD) which is in power for the past 4 years in Punjab was declared the winner of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) elections held on September 18.

Of the 170 seats that went to the polls, the SAD led by Sukhbir Singh Badal claimed victory on 157 seats, whereas on the other hand, the three candidates of Akali Dal (Amritsar) and four candidates from the Panthic Morcha backed by the Congress leaders could manage to win.

With this victory, the Badal family has shown their hold in the state. This is the third largest election contested by Akali Dal under the rule of Sukhbir, who took charge in 2007 and brought the party into power.

In the Lok Sabha elections 2009, he took over the party as a President and helped the party to get maximum seats even while being in power.

The victory has added the enthusiasm amongst the leaders and activists of the SAD to fight the upcoming Assembly Elections.
