Patna: Accusing the Central Government of ‘step-motherly treatment’, JD(U) spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Shivanand Tiwari said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has joined the chorus of HRD Minister over the contentious issue of Central University in the state.

Tiwari said that the Prime Minister told him three days back that the Centre wants a good Central University in Bihar and Kapil Sibal’s decision to set up University in Gaya instead of Motihari is a suitable place for it.

Earlier, the Nitish Kumar government had proposed a plan to grant Central University status to the Patna University. At that time, the Centre had asked the state government to provide land. The state government had provided the BIT Mesra’s campus for the purpose but later the Centre refused to grant Central University status to the Patna University and agreed to set up a new university at Motihari, but later changed its stand by stating that setting up a Central University near international airport in Gaya will boost the state economy.

Tiwari was addressing the media in the state capital on Sunday after senior leader Mithilesh Kumar Singh joined the JD(U). Mithilesh had been MLA from Chapra in 1977 and was an active member of the steering committee constituted by Jaya Prakash Narayan during the Emergency.
