New Delhi: Jumping a traffic light in the national capital can cost you a hefty sum! In a bid to control the dangerous driving and impound the hyperactive wheels, the Delhi traffic police have decided to increase the penalty amount from Rs 100 to Rs 1000 on jumping the red light.

Satyendra Garg, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said that volunteers from the educated class will be taken on board at large scale in this drive against those who jump red lights.

“With this drive, volunteers would not only contribute in an initiative taken by the police to control the increased road accidents but also help in restricting the bribing practice by becoming witnesses while issuing the challan to the lawbreakers”, he said.

It is to be noted that the decision came after the tragic incident on Sunday near Rajpath, where three Air Force personnels were killed when a Skoda car jumped a signal and rammed into their Maruti Omni Van.
