New Delhi: BJP veteran Atal Bihari Vajpayee is celebrating his 88th birthday.  Vajpayee was born on 25th December, 1924 in a Brahmin family in Gwalior.

Vajpayee is the only non-Congress Prime Minister of India to serve a full term. As a Member of Parliament for over four decades, he served as 10th Prime Minister of India from 1998 to 2004.  He was elected nine times to Lok Sabha and twice to Rajya Sabha.

Vajpayee’s charismatic personality influenced the national politics. He was the first Indian Prime Minister to deliver speech in Hindi in the United Nations.

First visit to jail during childhood

During August Kranti in 1942, Policemen nabbed a minor guy Atal Bihari Vajpayee who was kept in juvenile home. Vajpayee laughs while telling story of his first visit to jail.

Pursued Law degree with Father

Atalji along with his father pursued law degree. When Atalji wished to pursue law from DAV College, Kanpur, his father said that he will also pursue the legal degree with his son. As the law students they stayed in the same room in the hostel.

Nehru had said, “Vajpayee will become PM”

Former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru once said that one day Atal Bihari Vajpayee will serve as Prime Minister of India.

Mahatma Ramchandra Veer’s Amar Kirti Vijay Pataka changed Vajpayee’s life leaving a huge impact. It gave a new direction to his life.

Happiest moment

In 1997, he was sworn-in as Foreign Minister in Janata Party Government at the Centre. He delivered his speech in Hindi in United Nation session. Atalji considers it as the happiest moment of his life.

Vajpayee, the most enigmatic personality, can’t speak due to paralysis. He communicates through gestures. In the last 20 years, Vajpayee had undergone 10 surgeries. After routine physiotherapy session, he watches TV.
