Kanpur, Jan 08 (Agencies): In order to discourage people from using tobacco, the district administration here has issued an order stating that anyone found smoking or using tobacco products at public places or government offices will be fined by the authorities.

According to the new order, any government employee found smoking or using tobacco in the office premises will have to part with Rs 200 from his salary.

The administration has also formed a District Tobacco Control Cell and a team of officers will conduct surprise visits in offices and penalise the defaulters.

“Not only government employees but any person who is found smoking or using tobacco products in public places like malls, multiplexes, restaurants or shopping complexes will also be fined by the managers or owners,” said District Magistrate Mukesh Meshram.

Ban on sale and distribution of tobacco products within 100 meters of distance from schools, educational institutions and hospitals should be strictly implemented, he said.

“The responsibility of strict implementation of this order in public places-malls, multiplexes, restaurants, stadiums, bus stops- lies with the owners or managers and action will be taken against them if any defaulters are found in these places,” he added.
