Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister has increased tax on cigarettes by 10 percent in order to collect Rs 500 crore announced to compensate investors allegedly duped by the Saradha group.

A day after increasing tax on cigarettes, the Chief Minister on Thursday made a bizarre statement asking people to smoke more as it would help in raising the money quickly. “Smoking more would not harm but would help in raising money for those who have been duped,” said Mamata.

According to Mamata, this increased tax on cigarettes will help in raising Rs 150 crore. The Chief Minister also urged people to give the details of their investments to the commission to be headed by former Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court Shyamal Sen.

While announcing the relief fund she told investors that advertisements will be published in newspapers within a day or two giving details about how, when and where to file complaints and with which documents. She urged investors to keep their eyes on newspapers and ready documents to prove their investments.

The Chief Minister also urged people to carefully invest their money in future and slammed other parties for politicizing the issue.
