Amritsar: In a bid to tackle the illegal and anti-national activities along India’s international border with its most estranged neighbour, Pakistan, the authorities have agreed to engage sniffer dogs to assist security personnel and the custom officers in Punjab.

Besides setting up of Integrated Check Posts (ICP) and installing CCTV cameras in Attari, dog squads have also been engaged to check the inimical activities in the region.

The custom department has written to the Finance Ministry to deploy sniffer dogs to assist their personnel as the department is already facing shortage of staff and many of the department officials are bearing additional charges. The custom department’s headquarter in Amritsar has been assigned with the task to curb smuggling and illegal trafficking at several places like international airport, Attari railway station and Amritsar rail cargo in the vicinity.

Talking to Dainik Jagran, Custom Department Additional Commissioner SS Katiyar said, “We have written to the higher officials in this regard. The ICP and CCTV cameras along with sniffer dogs will be set up at the headquarter.”
