Los Angeles: Somdev Devvarman bowed out of the ATP Farmer's Classic after suffering a straight set defeat against Ryan Sweeting of the United States on Tuesday.

Somdev had beaten Sweeting last week in Atlanta in the first round en route to quarterfinals but it was the Indian's turn to suffer an early exit as he lost 4-6, 6-7 (6) to the American in the opening round of the singles main draw.

Somdev, ranked 62nd, battled for one hour and 52 minutes but it was 65th ranked Sweeting, who came out victorious.

Somdev will now compete in doubles competition of the $619,50 tournament.

He has paired with Philippines' Treat Conrad Huey and they will be up against top seeded Brazilian pair of Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares.
