The UPA chairperson said the Congress failed to live up to its expectations.

“The results are in front of us. We fought our opponents with our achievements and strategies but we did not get support as expected. We know there is win and loss in democracy. We accept defeat with humility,” Sonia told the media here.

“Whatever support we have got, I thank the voters and my party workers. As party president, I accept responsibility for the defeat,” she added.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi echoing similar sentiments congratulate the BJP-led NDA for registering a thumping victory in the Lok Sabha polls.

“I congratulate the new government. They have been given mandate by the people. I wish them all the best,” Rahul said.

Taking moral responsibility for the party’s dismal show, he added, “The Congress has done badly. There is a lot to think about. As the party’s vice-president, I hold myself responsible for what happened.”

The Bharatiya Janata Party is set for a comfortable majority in the Lok Sabha with its candidates taking early leads on 279 of the 543 seats.
