"They are saying that media is focusing on Uttar Pradesh, but this is the only state where politicians and the government shield rapists," Bharti said referring to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's contention that his state is being singled out by media.

"Uttar Pradesh has become a state which is known for growing crimes against women. All the political parties now have to talk and debate on this issue and as soon as the Parliament session starts there will be a debate about the rising crimes against women and law and order situation in the state," Bharti told reporters outside Parliament.

Commenting on the Badaun rape case, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh had courted controversy after he asked newsmen to focus on their jobs.

"I am doing my job, you should do yours,” he had said.
