Chief of Uttar Pradesh unit of Bahujan Samaj Party, Swami Prasad Maurya, is contesting from high profile Padrauna Assembly seat. He has been one of the main strategists behind BSP’s landslide victory in 2007 Assembly polls. In 2009 by-polls, he had defeated his nearest rival Shakir Ali of Samajwadi Party by a huge margin of about 53,000 votes.

Congress candidate Mohini Devi, mother of Union Minister of State for Surface Transport RPN Singh, had polled 27,994 votes and was thrown at third position.

Maurya is looking quite hopeful of being re-elected for the state assembly from here and trying to woo voters on development plank. During his poll campaigns, Maurya appears devotes most of his speech on counting the developmental works carried forward by his government in this area. He is facing challenge form SP candidate Bijendra Pal alias Bablu. The entry of BJP and Congress candidates in the fray has made the contest four cornered.

Rajesh Jaiswal of Congress and BJP candidate of Shri Ramdhari Gupta are contesting from here.

Maurya has coined a slogan- “57 years vs 2 years” highlighting his achievements on development fronts during last two years making an obvious comparison between Congress and him. Maury won 2009 assembly by-poll from Padrauna. He had lost 2007 assembly elections form Dalmau in Rae Bareli.

Maurya, a prominent Kushwaha leader and most trusted lieutenant of Chief Minister Mayawati, faces strong resistance from another dominant Kushwaha leader and his former colleague Babu Singh Kushwaha who has launched a campaign to disturb the poll prospects of BSP.
