Thiruvananthapuram(Agencies):The Kerala government has proposed  to form a special enforcement wing to tackle traffic cases in view of high rate of road mishaps, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said here on Tuesday.

On an average, 4,000 people are killed in road accidents in a year and about 40,000 others suffer injuries, he told the Assembly during Question Hour.

"Formation of a special traffic enforcement wing dedicated to handle accident cases and traffic offences is under consideration," he said.

Members from ruling and opposition sides expressed serious concern over the problem and wanted traffic rule violation cases to be handled sternly, without showing any leniency to offenders.

Deputy leader of Congress in the House,G Karthikeyan, said there had been instances of even policemen on traffic duty using mobile phones while controlling traffic at peak

Unauthorised parking of vehicles on roadsides and encroachment of sidewalks by vendors also contributed to accidents, he said, adding that stringent action would be taken against illegal parking.
