Prices of tomato, onion and potato generally shoot up between July and September every year, the Consumer Affairs and Food minister said.

Hoarding was also one of the reasons behind the price spiral of consumer goods, he said when asked about increase in prices of vegetables.

Referring to the meeting with the state Food Ministers to stabilise prices, Ram Vilas Paswan said no positive response was received in this direction.

On action against hoarders, he flayed the UP government alleging they were not sensitive towards the problem.

He also criticised the state government for non-implementation of the Food Security Act.

Ram Vilas Paswan said UP was a big state and, therefore, there was a need to make the public distribution system more transparent in the state.

In a reply to a question, Paswan said adequate stock of foodgrains was available in case of drought in any part of the country.
