New Delhi: Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma said the government is planning to set up steel processing units in five districts of Uttar Pradesh to build a TMT bar.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, the Minister said the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) itself will establish a unit in Barabanki, while other units will be installed in Hardoi, Mirzapur, Jhansi and Gonda districts with the help of conversion agent.

It is to be noted that, the Ministry of Mines has informed the Steel Ministry about availability of iron ores in Jhansi– Lalitpur, basis on which the Ministry of Steel has put forward a demand to the state government for a licence to explore the possibility of iron-ore mining in the district.

He said the Ministry is also looking at setting up a steel plant in Lalitpur which requires 1000-2000 acres of land.

With an investment of Rs 100 crore, the first phase of setting up steel plant at Jagdishpur is underway, which includes the installation of the TMT bar mill with a production capacity of 150,000-tonnes, corrugation lines to produce 13,000 tonnes of corrugated sheets, crash barrier line to produce 10,000 tonnes per year.

Besides, the land has been acquired at Lakhimpur to set up steel processing unit scheme to produce one lakh tonne TMT per year, for which the Ministry is preparing a new steel policy.

According the Minister, the country’s steel production is expected touch 20 crore tonne by 2020.
