SC concerned over air pollution in Delhi

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to Centre on the thick smog cover over Delhi and high pollution level in the national capital.

Intervening in this matter, an NGO- Centre for Science and Environment- said that diesel vehicles in the capital are mainly responsible for high smog level.

Amicus Curiae in this case, Harish Salve, advised for levying environment compensation charge of 2 percent on the petrol vehicles and 4 percent annually on diesel vehicles in Delhi/NCR region. He also advised for environment compensation charge of 25 percent on the purchase of each new diesel vehicle.

Earlier this month, a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir had expressed concern over rise in the level of pollution in the city.

The next hearing of this matter will take place in January 2013.
