New Delhi: Toughening stand over dilly-dallying of the state governments in introducing High Security Number Plate (HSNP) in the motor vehicles as a measure to check theft, the Supreme Court on Thursday set four- week deadline for the states to implement the scheme.

A bench headed by Chief Justice SH Kapadia asked the state governments to complete the implementation process and file an affidavit in this regard within the stipulated time and warned them to bear the consequences if they fail to pay heed to the order.

While several states have almost completed the introducing HSNP in motor vehicles, some are still working to implement it.

Former youth Congress president MS Bitta has filed a petition in the Apex Court seeking enforcement of the court’s order in implementing HSNP to restrict the cases of theft across the country.
