New Delhi: Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Thursday expressed hope that the winter session of parliament set to begin on Nov 22 will be a smooth affair without much disruptions from the opposition benches.

Shinde, who became leader of the Lok Sabha in July this year following the elevation of Pranab Mukherjee as the nation's president, also described the monsoon session in August and September this year as "a critical time" in view of the disruptions it witnessed.

The opposition, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the coal blocks allocations scandal, leading to most part of the monsoon session being washed out."In the last session, we had experienced a critical time," Shinde said about the monsoon session.

"All of us, including leaders of the opposition, understand that the country needs discussion on a number of issues and guidance. We hope the house will function," he said on the sidelines of an event here.

Out of 19 working days in the monsoon session, parliament functioned full time for only six days. Several key legislations, including the one on Lokpal, are pending to be passed in the Parliament.
