Vadodara: Extending support to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, on Saturday said that he is the most eligible leader for the country’s top executive post- Prime Minister.

Senior BJP leader Ananth Kumar also backed Sushma’s statement.

"Narendra Modi is most eligible leader for the Prime Minister’s post," Swaraj told reporters at the airport, responding to a query.

Swaraj arrived here to campaign for BJP ahead of voting on December 13 and 17. She will be addressing two rallies in the state, each one of them in Vadodara and Dabhoi town.

She also said that "Congress will be defeated in the next general election".

Modi is seeking a fourth term as Chief Minister in state assembly election.

Sushma Swaraj’s endorsement for Modi also signals a change within BJP. Notably, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley, had also recently said that Modi has backing of the entire party. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat too had express his favour for Modi, though indirectly, by saying that why a pro-Hindutva leader cannot become the Prime Minister of the country.

Sushma’s endorsement is significant and being seen as a major turn of event by the political pundits because Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray, who died on November 17 after prolonged ailment in Mumbai, had recently backed Sushma’s name for the Prime Minister’s post.
