Sushma filed her nomination papers in the office of the district returning officer of Raisen. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was also present during the filing of nomination papers.

Swaraj will be contesting against Congress leader Digvijay Singh's brother Laxman Singh, who is Congress's candidate from the constituency.

“I welcome Shri Laxman Singh as Cong candidate from Vidisha. This election should be a model of dignity and decency of Indian politics,” the BJP leader said on twitter last month.

Digvijay had last month reportedly said that Swaraj would be a much better Prime Minister than Narendra Modi, who is currently the BJP’s official nominee for the top post.

"I say that Sushma would be a much better Prime Minister than Modi due to a number of reasons,” he told reporters.

“Unlike Modi, Sushma Swaraj has an image of a moderate leader. She had begun her political career with the JP movement at a time when she was a student leader but had later on drifted towards the BJP,” he had stated.

Swaraj had won the 2009 Lok Sabha polls with a huge margin of over three lakh votes in Vidisha. She had an easy run last time as the nomination papers of Congress nominee Rajkumar Patel had been rejected on technical grounds.

Meanwhile, former Congress leader Raj Kumar Patel has filed his nomination as an Independent from Vidisha.
