The explosive batsman hammered eight fours and six sixes before being caught at deep mid-wicket off Reece Topley in the second last over.

Somerset managed to beat Essex by three wickets in the last blast thriller during their NatWest T20 Blast - South Group match.

After a shaky start on his debut, the Royal Challengers Bangalore and West Indies star bstaman smashed explosive 92 for Somerset after Essex was bowled out for 176.

Essex opening duo of Jesse Ryder and Tom Westley scored half-century apiece and gave their a great start. Ryder (54 off 28) lost his wicket in the ninth over giving Essex a solid start. Team score was 90/1 in 8.1 overs at this stage of the game.

Essex top scorer, Westley scored 68 off 56 balls and smashed seven fours, before being bowled out by Alfonso Thomas on the second last ball of the match.

Alfonso Thomas was the star bowler for Somerset with four wickets, while Jim Allenby claimed three wickets in three overs and gave away only 10 runs.

Gayle, is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsman to have ever played Twenty20 cricket made just five runs off his first 17 balls but went on to score his 48th T20 half-century.  

The 'Gayle storm' once again rattled the opposition and this time it was Essex. Gayle got a life shortly after reaching his half-century when he was dropped at third man by David Masters.

He was racing towards an incredible 15th T20 century after two more huge maximums off Graham Napier, before falling eight runs short - but still received a fine ovation from the home fans.
