Bhopal: Use and sale of polythene, gutkha and cigarettes has been banned in the premises of the 65th Aalmi Tablighi Ijtema (international Islamic congregation) beginning at Eintkheri from Saturday.

The decision to ban the items has been taken to preserve the environment, Ijtema committee spokesman Atiq-ul-Islam said adding that shopkeepers and participants have been informed about it.

Shopkeepers and hoteliers have been asked not to use polythene bags even as tea-sellers have been told to use disposable cups instead of the plastic ones, he said.

Although the committee has not fixed the fine for violating the ban order, the stall owners found guilty would not be considered for allotment of site next year, Atiq said. The three-day annual congregation starting from Saturday is likely to draw lakhs of devotees, who have started arriving from all over India and abroad including Russia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Morocco, Bangladesh, Iraq, UAE, Sri Lanka and South Africa, he added.
