Tiruchirappalli: Tamil Nadu Minister for Environment and Pollution Control and Minorities Welfare N Mariam Pitchai was killed in a road accident in Tiruvelangurichi, about 40 km from here, on early Monday morning.

Minister for Sports and Youth welfare N R Sivapathy was also injured when their vehicle collided with another moving ahead of their convoy while they were proceeding to Chennai after garlanding the statue of community leader Perumpidugumutharyar, police said.

The body of Pitchai, 60, has been brought to Madurai.

He was the councillor of Tiruchi Corporation and had won from the Madurai west constituency defeating former Transport Minister K N Nehru in the April 13 Assembly elections.
