Ahmedabad: Over 50 Tamil Nadu-based spinning mills have come together to form Cotton Sourcing Company Limited (COSCO) that would buy their requirement directly from producers in Gujarat, a director of the company said.
While Gujarat is the highest producer of cotton accounting for about 45 per cent of country's production, Tamil Nadu is the biggest consumer of cotton accounting for over 40 per cent of the consumption and the new company is expected to benefit both producers and spinners, he said.
The COSCO team is here to establish contacts with ginners here for direct purchase of cotton, company's director D Prabhu said.
"Till now the sale and purchase of cotton has not been an organized affair," he said.
COSCO, headquartered in Coimbatore, will keep trained staff here for professionalizing cotton sourcing process and remove wastage by ensuring quality at the source, he said.
COSCO will be the central hub for sourcing cotton on behalf of member mills; Prabhu said adding that at present there are 53 members in the team.
