"Railways is carrying 31 percent of total freight currently, while it carried 1.3 billion tonne of freight last year. It is growing rapidly," Gowda said.

Presenting the budget, the Railways Minister said he was flattered by all the requests that he had received since he had taken office but mentioned that he was overwhelmed by the problems and responsibilities.

The Railway Minister also said that surplus revenues are declining and there are hardly any resources for the development works. He said that Rs five lakh crore is required for ongoing projects only.

Gowda said that Indian railways was expected to play a social role while being a freight carrier but the national transporter couldn’t continue to play this role.
