Srinagar: Police on Monday used water cannons to disperse agitating government teachers who were protesting here to press for their demands which included higher wages.
A police official said 75 teachers have been detained. The protesting teachers, who were shouting slogans and carrying banners and placards, were stopped by a posse of policemen near Jehangir Chowk in the centre of the city here.
Coloured water cannons were also sprayed to foil the protest. Police also had to resort to cane-charge to disperse the agitating teachers.
The teachers were protesting to press for several of their demands, including regularisation of contractual staff and hike in salaries.
