New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seems to have brought the Congress-led UPA government on the back foot after tabling the Lokayukta Bill in Uttarakhand.

Appearing before the Parliamentary Standing Committee here on Thursday, the Team Anna submitted before the house panel that the Centre should take guidance from the Lokpal Bill passed in Uttarakhand.

The BJP has also extended support to the Team Anna’s stand. The Congress, however, has chosen to maintain a tactical silence on the entire issue.

Team Anna members Shanti Bhushan, Prashant Bhushan, Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal appeared before the Committee. After the meeting, the Standing Committee chief Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that they had a very productive discussion.

Later talking to reporters, Team Anna member Prashant Bhushan said, “We had a very good and positive meeting with the Standing Committee. We have also suggested several amendments in the government’s draft on Lokpal Bill on the pattern of Uttarakhand’s Lokayukta Bill. Moreover, we have requested the Committee to consider the Uttarakhand government’s version as the model for drafting the Jan Lokpal Bill.”

The team will have to face questions from the members of Standing Committee on Friday regarding their suggestions. Anna Hazare will also be present in the meeting.
