Leading by example, Van Persie scored an incredible opening goal before grabbing another as Netherlands annihilated the world champions Spain in a stunning start to World Cup Group B with a 5-1 triumph at the Fonte Nova arena.

Van Persie’s heroics drew wide scale admiration from the football fans all over the world with several altered images of him as super heroes superman, batman and Peter Pan being shared on social networking websites.

In one of such images, the talismanic Manchester United striker was portrayed as flying over one of Brazil’s most famous statues Christ- The Redeemer.

In another such image, Van Persie was also shown performing a five-star frog splash finishing move just like WWE wrestler Rob Van Dam.

Soon the hash tag #flyingDutchman started doing the rounds on social networking websites Twitter and Facebook.

“Is it a bird? NO Is it a plane? NO It's a a FLYING DUTCHMAN! OH ROBIN VAN PERSIE #NED #Oranje,” football fan Shaun ‏@ShaunMUFC20 wrote on Twitter.

“That goal looks even more brilliant in slo mo!!Oooofff this Robin fellow ;) #flyingDutchman #FIFA2014,” wrote another footie fan Malishka ‏@mymalishka.

Another Twitter user Waleed Abu Nada ‏@waleedabunada wrote: “It wasn't just the header that was great, it was the dive as well. Robin van Persie is truly a flying Dutchman!”

Apart from Van Persie, Twitteratis also went into raptures over Netherland’s coach Louis Van Gaal’s tactics that played a pivotal part in decimating the world number one team Spain.

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs was one of the first ones to praise Van Gaal and his footballing philosophy.

Van Gaal has already been appointed as the next Manchester United manager and several fans of the English giants eulogized his brilliant tactical game plan against Spain.

Speaking on South African TV, Giggs, who will be his assistant season, said: “What did you expect? He is a Manchester United manager.”

Meanwhile, Indian tennis star Somdev Devvarman also tweeted his delight over the appointment of Van Gaal as next Manchester United manager in the wake of Netherland’s dominating win over Spain.

“So excited about van gaal being the manager at united next year. Now more than ever !!!” Devvarman wrote on Twitter.
